Living abroad for an extended period presents unique challenges. Building a relationship with someone from a different cultural background or starting a new journey in a foreign country requires adapting to new languages, customs, and perspectives. For many, the challenge goes beyond learning grammar or etiquette. It can manifest as a persistent feeling of not being able to express oneself fully, or a sense of being misunderstood—even when language proficiency is high.
Encountering the ‘other’ — individuals from backgrounds different to one’s own — brings opportunities for growth, but it can also be overwhelming, resulting in stress, anxiety, conflicts, and even psychological or psychosomatic symptoms. Culturally informed support actively recognises and integrates clients’ cultural identities into the therapeutic process. My own journey as an immigrant in Ireland, Paraguay, Portugal, and Germany, alongside my experience with clients from over 30 countries, has repeatedly demonstrated the necessity of adopting an intercultural perspective in therapy.
Degree in Clinical Psychology (Brazil), MSc University of Liverpool, PhD UAB Lisbon. Additional training in family mediation and cross-border mediation.
Personalised support for immigrants and expatriates facing cultural adaptation, loneliness, anxiety, and other psychological aspects. For those who feel overwhelmed or unable to manage life’s challenges alone.
Specialised support for binational couples navigating cultural differences, family conflicts, and mutual adaptation. I have worked with many couples where subtle cultural norms impacted communication.
The psychotherapy I offer is tailor-made, depending on the preferences and abilities of each client, and is based on my different professional training (psychoanalysis, behavioural therapy, neuroscience). It takes two forms: short-term psychological counselling (focused on a specific problem) and longer-term therapy. The client chooses, under my guidance, the form that best suits their situation.
It is not the therapist’s job to judge, but to help the client find the solutions that best fit their life.
I am available to answer your questions and schedule an initial online consultation.
Therapy provided in English, German, Spanish, and Portuguese.
